Using aromatic native plants to attract wildlife!

Another of the more unique landscaping ideas for your backyard wildlife habitat is the carefully orchestrated use of aromatic and fragrant plants in your wildlife habitat backyard. Usually we think of gardening as a purely visual form of expression, but that's not always the case.

By planting some carefully selcted fragrant native plants, one can add a different element to the backyard.

There are not many landscaping ideas that can satisfy multiple senses at once, but fragrant plants are one way of doing just that. The attractive plants will satisfy your sense of aesthetics, while simultaneously providing an enjoyable aroma. And aromatic native plants will attract more wildlife as well. Both birds and butterflies are attracted to fragrant plans, as are the native stingless bees.

Some of the acacias have fragrant leaves and flowers, including suaveolans, leprosa, (flowers) fimbriata, and accola.

Many species of Eucalyptus have aromatic leaves, including the peppermints and the lemonscented gum. Early in the morning on a calm day, the lemonscented gums can be smelt for miles!

Many of the Melaleuca species have scented leaves and flowers too. Prostanthera have several highly aromatic varieties, cineolifera, melissafolia, rotundafolia, and incisa.

Backhouse citriodora is another native plant with aromatic flowers, and most of the Boronias. And there are many others.

So try to slip some of these native plants into your garden, the birds and native bees will love it!
